How to Get a Ride Along With Fire Department
Online Services
*** Out of an abundance of caution, PFA is temporarily suspending its public education programs. This includes our ride-along program. This is one of several efforts being undertaken to protect first responders and their patients from the COVID-19 virus. ***
Thank you for your understanding.
Ride-alongs are a great way for members of the public or prospective firefighters to learn more about the fire service. On your ride-along, you will shadow a fire crew for part of their day and experience everything they do (except safer of course.) If you're riding during mealtime, you can even buy into the food fund ($5-$10 usually) and enjoy some fire station cooking.
Keeping the community safe means we have to limit how many riders we can have. PFA reserves the right to reschedule, not fill, or cancel your ride-along at any time due to emergency response needs. Ride-alongs are permitted during the week from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. During the weekends, rides may be scheduled after lunch. Participants are not allowed to remain at the station after 9 p.m.
Please be aware that riders are only allowed one ride every six months.
Candidates on the eligibility list can participate in ride-alongs up until they are invited to an administrative interview. Theyare welcome to stop by and discuss PFA at any station during the process but may not ride or stay for a prolonged time. Per PFA policy EMT students and current PFA volunteers are exempt.
Please allow a minimum of five business days for us to process your request.
Riders must:
- Be at least 16 years of age. Minors must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
- Follow a dress code of dark (navy/black) pants (slacks), polo shirt and sturdy shoes, (lace-up boots recommended). No shorts, jeans, cut-offs, or any clothing that is revealing, or features alcohol, tobacco or drug advertising.
- Be in good health. You will be asked to disclose any medical concerns that may affect your ability to ride. No one with a severe cold or illness will be permitted to participate, for the protection of our crews and community members.
- Follow all orders given by the station captain while riding. Failure to do so will result in expulsion from the station.
To schedule your ride-along, please complete the following application.
Note: Fire academy and EMS recruits are required to do ride-alongs as part of their training. These riders will take priority over community member riders in our scheduling process. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding.
